Set designers, more specifically set designers for tv and movies have responsibilities such as reading scripts, produce plans, drawing and models for sets. They also work to prepare cost estimates for sets, manage budgets, as well as screen outdoor locations for filming, and attend filming as well as plan, meet with, and commission set construction companies. While there are many different degrees and credentials that are possible for this job, candidates are preferred to have degrees in theater, creative studies, preforming arts, visual or fine arts, graphic design, architecture or landscape design. Set designers might have an internship or be mentored by an experienced professional before they enter the industry in order to get experience and build a portfolio. College majors such as set design and theater are often best for this type of job and universities such as California Institute of the arts and Carnegie Melon University have well known programs.
